Squaw Valley USA
I saved my favorite resort for last! We ventured out to Squaw Valley on the last day of the trip, once again not many lifts were running but the famous KT-22 was so it saved the day. This lift accesses tons of bowl skiing and long, technical runs. They recieved about 12 inches of snow the night before which was the perfect amount for our tired legs. The steep pitch to Squaw and the vast amount of treeless skiing really makes this a must do if you go to the Tahoe area.
Kirwood Ski Resort
More snow fell during the second night so day three was another epic powder day! We ventured out to Kirkwood for some much needed bowl skiing. They had limited lift access because of the high winds again but this place reminded me of Squaw Valley with it's technicality. I would say there was about 18 inches of fresh snow in the bowl area's of Kirkwood and we pretty much stayed in there the entire day. I would love to come back here when the entire mountain is open, I didn't get to see much scenery here due to the cloud cover but it just looked and felt like Alta, Snowbird and Squaw. The drive up was interesting to say the least with high winds and snow covered roads. Check out how much snow was out there!
Sierra At Tahoe
The second day of the trip proved to be the biggest powder day of the vacation. Sierra At Tahoe received 36 inches the night before we pulled into the parking lot! High winds caused many of the area resorts to shut down or limit lift access again but Sierra At Tahoe is situated differently then most other resorts and gets sheltered from the wind. Chest deep powder runs filled our morning and afternoon. This epic day came close to the one I had at Alta last year, the snow was a bit heavier but still memorable. The runs here were solid, bowl access was limited due to avalanches but the tree skiing is worth the trip. Tons of stashes can be found here days after a major dump.
Heavenly Ski Resort
I Just got back from a 4 day ski trip to Lake Tahoe in Nevada/California. This was the second time I have ventured out to the Tahoe area for some skiing. With the close proximity to Reno Nevada and the many different options for skiing, it's hard to beat this place for convenience and ease of access.
The weather was crazy during our trip, it never really stopped snowing for the 4 days we were there. We decided to ski Heavenly the first day because it was the closest resort to our condo. Unfortunately for us, not many lifts were running due to the high winds so we had to stick to the middle part of the mountain. The trails all had at least 15 inches of fresh snow so we didn't mind the fact that our space was limited. We skied both the Cal side and the Nevada side, the latter being my favorite. There were stashes in the trees once the main slopes got tracked up, overall a good day. I would rank Heavenly as my least favorite place to ski out of the 6 resorts I have been too there. I have yet to ski the Mott Canyon Bowl area because of avalanche issues and the wind so my opinion may change if I get the chance to ski that.
